About Chronic Pain

Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain occurs when there is damage to the nervous system - that is, the nerves, spinal cord or brain. It tends to occur when a nerve that normally senses hot, cold or pain is injured in some way, and can present itself as burning, shock-like, stabbing or tingling pain sensations.

Some statistics about neuropathic pain:

  • According to the National Pain Foundation, neuropathic pain affects up to 4 million people in the United States.
  • The most common neuropathic pain is that from spine disorders.
  • Not everyone with back pain or a spinal disorder experiences neuropathic pain.

What causes neuropathic pain?

Neuropathic pain can occur as a result of an injury to the nervous system. Common causes include damage to the spinal cord, brain or nerves. Patients with varied conditions may frequently experience daily neuropathic pain, which can greatly impact their quality of life.

How is neuropathic pain treated?

Certain medications can be helpful for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Some patients also seek alternative or complementary treatment methods, such as acupuncture, herbal remedies, massage, meditation or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).

NOTE: ULTRAM® ER has never been studied in specific neuropathic pain patients.

If you think you may experience neuropathic pain, complete a pain profile to take to your doctor - and ask if ULTRAM® ER could be the right course of treatment for you.
